Getting Rid of San Jose Skunks without Killing Them

Skunks are harmless creatures and omnivores. They are feared because of their smell and noxious spray. They can also be carriers of rabies. If any skunks are found in your yard or garden it is important to get rid of them. This can be done and is more humane than killing. Our interest in environment protection also includes wildlife protection. There are many simple methods to get rid of skunks. Skunks approach human habitation mostly in search of food. If they find it easily they may decide to settle and hide in your yard, garden or under decks. Preventing their entry is important. Getting rid of San Jose skunks is a three step process.

Non availability of food
Skunks can eat any food available. They eat fallen fruits and seeds, old food, egg shells and any other food items they see. Special care must be taken to keep food non available. Ripe fallen fruits must be picked up soon. Lawns trimmed and the yard regularly swept. Garbage cans kept properly secure and also a little away from the house. The smell from open garbage may be nauseating to humans but it is very enticing to a California skunk. Bird feeders can have trays below to catch falling seeds.

Deter skunks from dwelling in your yard
Discourage skunks from making homes in your yard. Unattended piles of old wood, rocks, building materials are excellent places for San Jose skunks to hide and shelter. Presence of skunks can be known by the tunnel shaped holes they burrow. If you have skunks under a deck or shed then exclusion barrier of steel mesh must be installed around the perimeter. They must be at least 12” into the ground with the bottom end sloping outwards.

Using other deterrents
There are several other deterrents which can be used. Skunks are nocturnal animals and it is at night that they try to enter. Having bright lights in the yard prevents them. Lights can be solar powered to save energy costs or they can be activated by motion sensors. Motion sensors can also be used to activate sprinklers. Sprays and repellents can also be used on the fences, trees or in places where they frequent. Pepper sprays and other chemical sprays are available. Rags soaked in ammonia can be used. Fox and dog urine spray can also be used. Sprays and repellents have to be regularly used as they tend to wear off with time or in case of rain.

Trapping a skunk
If you are aware of the presence of a California skunk it is best to trap it and relocate it. Spring loaded traps are available. The trap must be kept in a shady place with bait. When the skunk is caught it is best to relocate the animal as early as possible. Wear thick clothes and be fully covered and avoid being sprayed. Relocation must be done far away so that it cannot return. If you are not confident of trapping a San Jose skunk there are many experts from animal control who can help you.
